Rye Beach New Hampshire: The NH Seacoast Town That Gets Everything Right – Unscripted Places
Unscripted Places · Coastal Escapes · New Hampshire

New Hampshire has eighteen miles of ocean coastline. Rye Beach is the best of it — and the lobster roll will be nearby.

Rye Beach, New Hampshire sits between Hampton Beach and Portsmouth on America’s shortest ocean coastline — eighteen miles that include some of the best beach on the entire New England coast, a legendary lobster shack on Route 1A, and the specific quiet that only the right beach town delivers.

Unscripted Places — Quick Answer

Is Rye Beach Right for Your Trip?

The honest answer from someone who watched the 1976 Montreal Olympics in a waterfront house right on the beach here.

The Beach

Jenness & Wallis Sands

Two state beaches, both genuinely beautiful. Water in the low to mid-60s in August — cold, New England, exactly right. Lifeguards in season. Bring a layer for the ferry crossing.

Portsmouth Day Trips

Twenty minutes north — one of the great small cities of New England. Historic waterfront, Strawbery Banke, the best restaurant scene on the NH coast. A day in Portsmouth from a Rye base is the whole trip.

New Hampshire charges no sales tax on anything — restaurants, shops, gear. A genuine financial advantage over neighboring Massachusetts and Maine that adds up over a week.

Route 1A Coastal Road

The coastal road through Rye along the ocean — rocky headlands, sandy coves, houses behind stone walls, the Atlantic constantly visible. Do it in both directions at different times of day.

The Summer of 1976

In the summer of 1976, I spent time at a family friend’s house right on the water in Rye Beach. The Montreal Olympics were on — the games that gave us Nadia Comaneci’s perfect tens. Three networks. No cable. You watched what was on and you were glad to have it.

The house was right on the water. The beach was glorious. The Atlantic was cold and exactly right. Some places earn their place in memory simply by being beautiful at exactly the right moment. Rye Beach in 1976 was that place for me — and it’s still that place for anyone willing to drive eighteen miles of New Hampshire coastline and stop before they reach Hampton Beach.

The Beach

Rye Beach’s coastline alternates between sandy beach sections and rocky headlands — the classic New England coastal geography that gives this stretch of shore its visual drama. Jenness State Beach and Wallis Sands State Beach are the two main public beach access points, both well-maintained and genuinely beautiful.

The water is cold — this is the Gulf of Maine, not the Carolina coast. Water temperatures peak in the low to mid-60s in August. New Englanders swim in it without complaint. The cold is part of the experience and eventually becomes the point.

Rye Harbor State Park — a rocky point jutting into the Atlantic with dramatic wave action. Not a swimming beach — a watching beach. One of the best spots on the NH coast for standing on rocks above the ocean.

The NH Seacoast

Eighteen miles that include a lot more than beach. Portsmouth to the north. Hampton Beach to the south. Rye in the middle, making it the natural base for exploring in both directions.

Portsmouth — 20 Minutes North

One of the great small cities of New England. Historic waterfront, Strawbery Banke living history museum, the best restaurant scene on the NH coast. Row 34 for oysters. Black Trumpet for a proper dinner. Worth a full day from a Rye base.

Hampton Beach — 10 Minutes South

The commercial beach town with the boardwalk, summer crowds, the classic beach energy. The opposite of Rye in character. Worth an afternoon if the boardwalk is what you want. Know which one you came for before you arrive.

Isles of Shoals

A cluster of small islands about ten miles offshore, reachable by ferry from Portsmouth. Star Island hosts day trippers. A genuinely unusual New England day trip that most visitors never make.

Where to Stay

Rye Beach is primarily residential — the waterfront houses set behind stone walls along Route 1A are the character of the place. Staying in a rental house near the water is the right way to experience it. Portsmouth, twenty minutes north, has stronger hotel inventory if a rental house isn’t the plan.

Where to Eat

Petey’s Summertime Seafood

The beloved seasonal seafood shack on Route 1 in Rye — lobster rolls, chowder, fried seafood baskets, outdoor picnic tables. The quintessential NH coast seafood experience. Cash preferred, lines in summer, worth the wait.

Black Trumpet (Portsmouth)

The Portsmouth destination restaurant — creative American menu with global influences, serious wine list. Twenty minutes north. Reservations essential.

Row 34 (Portsmouth)

Outstanding oyster bar and seafood in Portsmouth’s waterfront district — local oysters, exceptional raw bar, the best oyster selection on the NH coast.
