Virginia Beach’s Atlantic Ocean beach is wide, clean, and well-managed — lifeguarded in season, regularly maintained, with the full force of the Atlantic behind it. The resort area is the most developed but the beach itself is the same beach from one end to the other.
The beach is widest in the resort area near the boardwalk — wide enough to feel spacious even on a busy summer day. North of 40th Street the development thins and the beach becomes more residential. The area around Cape Henry at the northern end of the city has a more natural character. Sandbridge, about 15 miles south of the resort area, is the quieter option — fewer hotels, more vacation rental houses, the same ocean. Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge south of Sandbridge is the wild end of the spectrum — no development, pristine dunes, the Atlantic as it was before anyone built on it.
The Boardwalk
The Virginia Beach Boardwalk runs 3.5 miles from Rudee Inlet at the south end to 40th Street at the north — a wide concrete promenade rather than the traditional wooden boardwalk of Ocean City or Rehoboth. Hotels line the west side, beach access the east. The Neptune statue at 31st Street is the landmark. Bike rentals are available throughout the season — the boardwalk is wide enough to cycle comfortably and biking the full length is one of the better Virginia Beach activities.
The Chesapeake Bay Side
Virginia Beach sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay — and the Bay side offers a completely different experience. Chick’s Beach (Chesapeake Beach) on the Bay side has calmer, warmer water than the Atlantic, a more local feel, and some of the best seafood restaurants in the city. The Lesner Bridge area and the restaurants around Shore Drive are the Bay-side destination that Virginia Beach visitors often miss entirely.
September is the best month. Water temperature peaks in September — still warm from the summer, crowds dramatically reduced after Labor Day, rates significantly lower. The Virginia Beach September is what the Delaware beaches call their “secret season.” Same ocean, fraction of the summer intensity.
