My grandparents visited Rehoboth Beach every summer through the 1970s. They loved it. But getting to the sand — really getting there, to the water’s edge — wasn’t something that happened easily, if at all. The beach house was the destination. The ocean was something you looked at from the deck.

That wasn’t unusual for the time. The Americans with Disabilities Act wasn’t signed until 1990. Before that, public spaces — beaches included — were under no legal obligation to accommodate people with mobility challenges. The infrastructure simply didn’t exist. Sand is hard. Boardwalks were often uneven. There were no beach wheelchairs, no mobi mats, no accessible parking designed with beach access in mind.

Rehoboth Beach in 2026 is a different place. Here’s exactly what’s there now — the programs, the access points, the things that actually work — and the honest notes on where gaps still exist.

Rehoboth Beach: The Most Accessible Delaware Beach

Free Beach Wheelchairs

Rehoboth Beach provides free beach wheelchairs through the Rehoboth Beach Patrol during summer season. These are beach-specific chairs designed for sand and shallow water — wide wheels, different from a standard wheelchair. No reservation accepted — first come, first served.

Mobi Mats — Beach Access Routes

Rehoboth Beach uses polyester mesh mobi mats at dune crossings during summer season — roll-out pathways that provide a firm surface over sand, making it possible for wheelchair users and others with mobility challenges to reach the beach without sinking into soft sand. Additional mats are placed at Maryland Avenue and Laurel Street to extend access closer to the water.

Boardwalk Access

The Rehoboth Beach boardwalk is fully paved and flat — one of its genuine advantages for anyone with mobility considerations. Ramps to the beach are available at Maryland Avenue, Philadelphia Street, and the Boardwalk and Surf Avenue intersections. The boardwalk itself is accessible end to end.

Parking

Designated accessible parking spaces are available near the boardwalk access points. Metered accessible parking at the Savannah Beach and Johnnie Walker Beach areas. Rehoboth’s parking fills fast on summer weekends — arrive early or consider being dropped off at the Maryland Avenue or Laurel Street access points.

Accessible Restrooms

Public accessible restrooms are located at Delaware Avenue and the Boardwalk, Rehoboth Avenue and First Street, and Baltimore Avenue and the Boardwalk.

Bethany Beach

Bethany Beach has beach wheelchairs and mobi mat access routes similar to Rehoboth. The quieter, less crowded atmosphere of Bethany makes it worth considering specifically for accessibility reasons — navigating a beach with mobility equipment in the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd of a Rehoboth summer weekend is a different experience than doing it at Bethany where the beach is significantly less packed.

Bethany also has accessible parking near its small boardwalk and accessible beach access points. For families or groups where accessibility is the primary concern, Bethany’s combination of good infrastructure and lower crowd levels makes it a genuinely strong option.

Delaware State Parks

Cape Henlopen State Park

Cape Henlopen, three miles north of Rehoboth, has beach wheelchair availability and accessible facilities. The park also has accessible trails, accessible picnic areas, and some of the best birding on the Delaware coast from accessible vantage points. The WWII observation tower has limited accessibility but the surrounding grounds are navigable. Entry fee applies.

Delaware Seashore State Park

Delaware Seashore State Park, between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach on Route 1, offers beach wheelchair availability and mobi mat equipment at designated locations. Delaware State Parks makes beach wheelchairs available year-round at some locations — not just during summer season like the town beaches. Contact Delaware State Parks directly to confirm current availability and specific access point locations before your visit.

What Changed — And Why

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed in 1990. Before that, there was no federal legal framework requiring public spaces to be accessible — including beaches. My grandparents visiting Rehoboth in the 1970s were doing so in a legal and cultural environment where the beach simply wasn’t built for people with mobility challenges. That wasn’t cruelty or indifference on the part of anyone running the beach. It was the norm of the era.

The ADA didn’t immediately fix beach accessibility — beaches present unique challenges that standard ADA guidelines don’t fully address, and beach access has been an ongoing area of advocacy and rulemaking since 1990. The mobi mat programs at Rehoboth and Bethany, the free beach wheelchair programs, the accessible parking — these are relatively recent developments, mostly from the 2000s and 2010s, as beach towns have worked to implement meaningful access beyond the minimum requirements.

It’s genuinely better. Not perfect — the honest gap section above is real — but genuinely, meaningfully better than it was fifty years ago. My grandparents would have had more options today.

• Consider Bethany for crowds: If navigating a crowded beach is a concern, Bethany’s lower crowd level is a real advantage beyond just the quieter atmosphere.
• Accessible rentals: When searching for vacation rentals, filter specifically for accessibility features — ground floor, step-free entry, roll-in shower, wider doorways. VRBO and Hotels.com both allow filtering for accessible properties.
• Parking strategy: The Maryland Avenue and Laurel Street access points at Rehoboth have the best combination of accessible parking and beach wheelchair availability. Plan your arrival around these locations.
• September advantage: Off-season accessibility is often better in practice — fewer crowds, same infrastructure, easier parking, more relaxed experience overall.
