Five friends from kindergarten, a three-story house right on the sand, and the realization that Bethany Beach, Delaware was always the right place — we just weren’t ready for it.
Her parents wouldn’t have invited us in our 20s. We were too wild for Bethany Beach back then. In 2021, five friends from kindergarten finally made it to that three-story beach house — and it really didn’t get any better than that.
Bethany Beach, Delaware is what happens when you stop chasing the party and start chasing the right kind of weekend. It took us a few decades to get there. It was worth every year of the wait.
Is Bethany Beach Right for Your Trip?
The honest answer — Bethany is not for every version of yourself.
The Beach Itself
Wide, clean, uncrowded relative to Rehoboth. If you want the ocean more than the scene around it — Bethany is the right call. The quiet resort earns the name.

Dewey GuideFive Friends From Kindergarten
The invitation came from one of my closest friends — her family has a beach house in Bethany, and each year a family member gets their stretch of time there. In 2021, it was her turn.
A three-story house right on the beach. Waking up to the ocean. Cooking at home, going out for dinner a couple of evenings, spending the days exactly where we wanted to be — on the sand, doing nothing in particular, being exactly where we were.
It really didn’t get any better than that.
“In our 20s we wanted Rehoboth. In our 50s we needed Bethany.”
Bethany vs Rehoboth: It’s Really About Life Stage
If you’ve spent any time on the Delaware coast, you already know the difference between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. Rehoboth has the bars, the boardwalk energy, the scene. When we were younger, that’s where we wanted to be — loud, social, out late.
Bethany is quieter. More families. Less noise. The kind of beach town where people come to actually rest, not perform a vacation. For years that wasn’t interesting to us. Then somewhere along the way it became exactly what we needed.

The House on the Beach
Staying directly on the beach changes everything about a beach trip. There’s no loading up the car, no hauling chairs and coolers across a parking lot, no staking out territory in the morning. You walk out the door and you’re there. The sound of the ocean is the background noise of every conversation, every meal, every quiet moment on the deck.
We cooked most of our meals at home — which at a beach house means something different than it does anywhere else. Cooking together, eating together, being somewhere together without an agenda. We went out for dinner a couple of evenings, but honestly the best parts happened right there at the house.

What Bethany Beach Actually Feels Like
Bethany Beach is small — intentionally, historically small. It calls itself “the quiet resort” and it means it. The beach is wide and clean. The town has a small boardwalk, a handful of shops and restaurants, and a pace that actively resists the kind of development that has overtaken other beach towns up and down the coast.
For a girls weekend with kindergarten friends you haven’t slowed down enough to properly catch up with in years — it’s exactly right.

The Honest Take
Bethany Beach is not the beach for every version of yourself. The 25-year-old version of me would have been bored there. The version of me that showed up in 2021 — with four friends I’ve known since kindergarten, in a house on the water, with nowhere to be and nothing to prove — couldn’t have been happier anywhere else on earth.
Some beaches are for who you were.
Bethany Beach is for who you became.
