Bethany: The Beach I Wasn’t Ready For
In the summer of 2021, one of my closest friends — five of us have known each other since kindergarten — invited us to her family’s beach house in Bethany Beach. Her parents wouldn’t have invited us in our 20s. We were too wild for Bethany back then. In 2021, it was exactly right.
A three-story house right on the beach. We cooked at home. We went out for dinner a couple of evenings. We spent our days on the sand doing nothing in particular. Five women who have known each other for fifty-plus years, finally at the quiet beach, with nowhere to be and nothing to prove. It really didn’t get any better than that.
What Bethany Actually Is
Bethany calls itself “the quiet resort” and means it. A short boardwalk with real charm — no amusement rides, no carnival games, just quintessential beach shops, a bandstand for summer concerts, and a pace that actively resists the kind of development that has taken over other beach towns. The beach is wide, clean, and significantly less crowded than Rehoboth in peak season. It’s for people who want the ocean more than the scene around it.
