Senior Week at Rehoboth Beach is a long-standing tradition for high school graduates from Maryland, DC, Virginia, and Pennsylvania — the week after graduation, a beach house full of classmates, the first real taste of freedom before college. The tradition has been happening since at least the 1960s and shows no signs of stopping. The question for parents isn’t whether to let them go. The question is how to prepare them for what’s genuinely different now versus when you went.
Senior Week 2026: What’s Changed Since Your Senior Week
The beach is the same. Four things are categorically different.
The Drug Supply
Fentanyl is now present in pills and powders sold as other drugs. Any pill from an unknown source can be fatal. One pill that looks like Xanax or Adderall can kill someone. This is the conversation that wasn’t necessary before 2015.
Takeover Events
Organized events where crowds converge rapidly on the boardwalk. Four students were charged with felonies for their alleged role in one. Being present — even as a bystander — can result in arrest.
Law Enforcement
More officers, undercover operations, organized takeover event response. Felony charges for riot-related behavior are real and have been used. The consequences for college and careers are real.
MIP Is Still Most Common
Minor in Possession is still the most common charge. First offense: fine, 30-day license suspension. Do NOT pay without talking to a Delaware attorney first — diversion programs may be available.
What’s Changed Since Your Senior Week
The boardwalk is the same. The beach is the same. The houses are the same. What’s different is the drug supply — and that requires a different conversation than the one your parents had with you.
Then (1980s–2000s)

The Fentanyl Conversation
This is the thing that is categorically different from every Senior Week before approximately 2015. Have this conversation. Be direct. Be specific.
Fentanyl — a synthetic opioid 100 times more potent than morphine — is now present in pills and powders sold as other drugs throughout the illicit supply. A pill that appears to be Xanax, Adderall, or a pressed MDMA tablet may contain fentanyl. A lethal dose of fentanyl is approximately 2 milligrams — invisible to the naked eye.
The conversation to have: if you didn’t personally obtain a pill from a licensed pharmacy with a prescription in your name, you don’t know what’s in it. “My friend got it from someone reliable” is not reliable. “It looks like a Xanax bar” means nothing. The pill that killed someone last weekend also looked like a Xanax bar.
Naloxone (Narcan) is available without a prescription at CVS, Walgreens, and most pharmacies. It reverses opioid overdose. Some parents send their kids to Senior Week with a Narcan kit. This is not an overreaction. Knowing how to use it takes five minutes.
The Takeover Events
In recent years, Senior Week at Rehoboth has seen organized “takeover” events — large groups converging on the boardwalk and beach areas rapidly, creating crowd situations that escalate into confrontations with law enforcement. In 2023, four college students were charged with felonies — Intent to Commit or Facilitate a Riot and Conspiracy in the Second Degree.
Being present is enough: Being in the vicinity of a takeover event — even as a bystander who had no idea what was happening — can result in arrest. Felony charges can affect college admission, financial aid, employment background checks, military service eligibility, and professional licensing. If a crowd starts forming rapidly and the energy shifts — leave immediately. Don’t stay to watch. Don’t film. Leave.

Stay With Your Group
