The Delaware beaches have been the DC area’s beach for generations and this is the drive that connects them. We used to take the Greyhound back in the day. It went from Ocean City, took forever, stopped everywhere. Nobody does that anymore, and here’s what’s replaced it.

BestBus / OurBus
Direct bus from Dewey Beach to Union Station DC. About 2.5–3 hours, $20–60. Runs Friday–Monday in summer. Wi-Fi, outlets, water. The modern version of what we used to do on Greyhound — but actually good.
Greyhound / Connections
Still technically possible via Ocean City or Wilmington with transfers. Takes significantly longer than driving. Not worth it when BestBus runs direct.
DART Beach Bus + Connections
Delaware’s DART bus runs Rehoboth to Wilmington during summer, then Amtrak to DC. Works in summer only. More connections, more things that can go wrong.
Option 1: Drive — Still the Default

The route from DC to Rehoboth Beach is straightforward: head south on Route 50 or Route 301 through Maryland, cross the Bay Bridge, then Route 404 or Route 13 to Route 1 south into Rehoboth. Google Maps will optimize in real time depending on traffic — follow it rather than a fixed route on a summer Friday.
The Friday Traffic Problem
Leaving DC on a Friday afternoon in July is one of the great summer traffic experiences in the mid-Atlantic — not in a good way. Route 50 east and Route 301 south both back up, and Route 1 into Rehoboth can add an hour or more once you’re in Delaware. The same drive that takes 2.5 hours on a Tuesday morning can take 5+ hours on a Friday at 3pm. Leave DC by noon or after 7pm. There is no middle ground.
The Sunday Return
Sunday northbound from Rehoboth back to DC is worse in some ways because you can’t time it as easily — everyone leaves the beach Sunday and arrives on the Beltway at the same time. Leave before noon or after 6pm. The 2pm–5pm window on a summer Sunday is a mistake every year and people make it every year.
The local secret: Route 404 west from Bridgeville to the Bay Bridge is a legitimate alternate when Route 50 is gridlocked. It adds some miles but often saves significant time on summer Sundays. Put both routes in your maps before you leave and check real-time traffic.
Option 2: BestBus / OurBus — The Greyhound Replacement
Direct bus from Dewey Beach to Union Station, Washington DC. About 2.5–3 hours, $20–60. This is what the Greyhound used to be, except it actually works.
BestBus — originally called DC2NY — runs direct service between the Delaware beaches and Washington DC on weekends during summer season. OurBus also covers the route. Both pick up in Dewey Beach, which is two miles south of Rehoboth on Route 1, and drop off at Union Station in DC, which puts you on the Metro for anywhere in the city.

The math on this one: If you’re going solo or as a couple, the bus often beats driving when you factor in gas, tolls, and the very real possibility of sitting in traffic for two extra hours on a summer Friday. The bus uses Route 1 too — it’s not magic — but it departs at scheduled times and you’re not the one driving.
The Old Way: Greyhound
We used to take the Greyhound back in the day. It went from Ocean City, took forever, stopped everywhere. The route technically still exists in some form — Greyhound to Wilmington or Ocean City, then connections south — but with BestBus running direct service to Union Station for $20–60, there’s no reason to piece together a multi-transfer Greyhound journey that takes twice as long.
The Greyhound made sense when it was the only option. It isn’t anymore.
DART Beach Bus — The Summer Local Option
Delaware’s DART First State runs the Beach Bus service during summer — connecting Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach to Wilmington, Delaware on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day. From Wilmington you can connect to Amtrak to DC, which runs frequently on the Northeast Corridor.
Total trip time with this chain: 90 minutes to Wilmington, then 1.5–2 hours on Amtrak to Union Station. Call it 3.5–4 hours with connections, more if timing doesn’t work out. More complex than BestBus but useful if you want to break up the trip or already have an Amtrak reservation.
DART Beach Bus runs summer only — Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Off-season, public transit options from Rehoboth to DC become significantly more complicated. Drive or check current schedules at dartfirststate.com.

Everything else is manageable.
The people who have been making this drive for fifty years know it: leave DC by noon on Friday or don’t leave until after dinner. Leave the beach by noon on Sunday or stay for dinner and leave after. The beach will still be there. The traffic will not improve.
