Where to actually park at Bethany Beach — before you’re circling the block with a car full of kids wondering why you didn’t plan ahead.
Bethany Beach parking has been a problem since at least the 1970s and 80s when I was watching families navigate this coastline for the first time. If anything it’s gotten harder. I’ve never had to deal with it personally — every time I’ve been to Bethany I’ve been lucky enough to stay within walking distance of the beach. But I know this coastline well enough to know what the parking situation actually is, and the answer is: plan ahead or you will be circling.
Where to Park at Bethany Beach
Downtown fills by mid-morning. Here are your real options.
Metered Street Parking
Limited metered spots downtown near the boardwalk. Gone by mid-morning on summer weekends. Arrive by 9am if this is your plan — after that, don’t count on it.
Garfield Parkway State Lots
State-run lots off Garfield Parkway — more consistent availability than downtown. Still arrive early. Pay at the machines. Your most reliable option if you can’t get downtown.
Fenwick Island State Park
A short drive south of downtown Bethany on Route 1. More parking, bathrooms, concession stand. Not walking distance to downtown but excellent if you just want the beach.

Why Bethany Beach Parking Fills Up So Fast
Bethany Beach is a small town by design. It calls itself the quiet resort and it means it — which also means limited public lots, metered street parking downtown, and capacity that simply cannot keep up with peak summer demand.
The town is compact and walkable, which is one of its great advantages. The downside of that compactness is that parking infrastructure is limited. Downtown Bethany Beach has metered street parking and a small number of nearby lots. On a sunny Saturday in July by 10am, those spots are gone. Drivers end up circling for 30 minutes or more before giving up and either leaving or finding an alternative.
This is not a new problem. Families have been dealing with Bethany Beach parking since the 1970s. It hasn’t gotten better as the beach has gotten more popular. What has changed is that there are now better alternatives if you know where to look.
Holiday weekends and Senior Week: If you’re visiting during Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, or Senior Week — do not plan on finding downtown parking after 9am. These are the days when the lot situation is genuinely impossible. Use one of the alternatives below or arrange a ride.
Your Real Parking Options
Downtown Metered Parking
Metered street parking is available on and around Garfield Parkway and the streets near the Bethany Beach boardwalk. These are the closest spots to the beach and boardwalk and they fill first. Pay at the meters, follow the posted time limits, and check the signs carefully — enforcement is real. If you arrive by 9am on a summer weekend you have a reasonable chance. After that, plan on one of the alternatives.
Garfield Parkway State Lots
State-run parking lots off Garfield Parkway have more capacity than the downtown street parking and tend to hold availability a bit longer into the morning. These are your best bet if downtown is full — pay at the machines, walk to the beach, done. Not far from the boardwalk area.
Fenwick Island State Park
A short drive south on Route 1, Fenwick Island State Park has more consistent parking availability than anything in downtown Bethany and comes with the amenities families need — bathrooms and a concession stand. The beach at Fenwick is excellent and less crowded than the Bethany town beach. If you’re coming for the beach itself rather than the downtown boardwalk experience, Fenwick is often the better choice anyway. Entry fee applies.

The Inlet Area near Big Chill
Parking near the inlet area south of downtown has more availability than the town center but it’s not walking distance to the Bethany boardwalk. Good option if you just need beach access and don’t need to be near downtown. Bathrooms and concessions available.
Bethany Beach Riders
Local ride service operating in the Bethany Beach area. If you’re staying in a rental within a few miles and don’t want to deal with the parking situation at all — this is the answer. Particularly worth it on holiday weekends and the most crowded summer days when circling is genuinely futile. Verify current availability and rates before your trip.
The Honest Advice
Arrive early or have a plan. Those are the two options at Bethany Beach in summer. Everything else is circling.
Locals are consistent on this: 9am is the cutoff. Before 9am on a summer weekend you have a real shot at downtown parking. After 9am on a busy day you are gambling. The families who have been coming to Bethany for decades know this and plan around it — early morning arrival, beach chairs set up by 8:30am, the best spot on the sand before the crowd arrives. It’s a different kind of beach day than sleeping in until 10am and heading out, but it’s a better one.
The other strategy that works: stay within walking distance of the beach. It’s the reason people pay a premium for rentals close to the boardwalk and why I’ve never had to deal with the parking situation personally. Walk to the beach and the problem disappears entirely.

September Parking Secret
After Labor Day, Bethany Beach parking is essentially not a problem. The summer crowd disperses and the lots that were impossible in July are accessible in September. If you have any flexibility on timing, a September visit to Bethany Beach solves the parking problem, the crowd problem, and the reservation problem all at once — with warm water still waiting for you.
